The station itself seemed to remember every farewell that had passed through its gates.

Thirteen years ago, the Memoriale della Shoah opened, an unassuming threshold to the past, built deep within a sub level below the main tracks, Platform 21, from which thousands of Jewish men, women, and children were taken from beneath the station and sent toward the darkness of the camps.
